About me
I am a Research Associate and Lecturer at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, Germany. Educated as a historian and political scientist at the University of Konstanz and Peking University, my research primarily focuses on history and politics of modern China since the 1970s, the evolving dynamics of Sino-German relations in the 20th century, China’s evolving role in global affairs and current challenges in foreign and security policy arising from the Sino-American hegemonic rivalry and the emerging transatlantic tensions. My scholarly work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals in German, English, and Mandarin.
After studying History and Political Science at the University of Konstanz and Peking University, I began my doctoral research on the role of China expertise in the Federal Republic of Germany from the 1960s to the 1980s. In my dissertation, I examine how journalists, scholars, businesspeople, and diplomats functioned as mediators between two political systems, forming an epistemic community whose knowledge production and advisory practices shaped West Germany’s understanding of the “Black Box China”.
In September 2024, I co-organized an interdisciplinary conference on the concept of expertise, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg. The event brought together scholars from history, political science, sinology, and sociology to explore how expertise is constructed, attributed, and challenged in 20th-century contexts.
Beyond academia, I regularly contribute to the public debate on Sino-German relations through interviews and commentaries in national and international media (including The Diplomat, The Interpreter, Tagesschau, NDR, and WDR). Since 2022, I have advised federal institutions on aspects of German China policy. I am an active member of several academic associations, a recipient of multiple fellowships, and have broad international experience. Since 2020, I have also served as a voluntary evaluator for the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, including its China Scholarship Program.
